The Sporting JAX men’s team was back out West Saturday night, falling 5-0 to Sacramento Republic FC in an interconference USL Championship match.
Mota Takes the Pitch
Sporting JAX’s newest signing, Jean Mota, made his debut for the club Saturday. Coming on in the 76th minute, the Brazilian midfielder made an immediate impact, jumping right into the match with a tangible spark.
This was highlighted in the 87th minute when Mota left the ground for a bicycle kick. While the shot was ultimately thwarted by Sacramento goalkeeper Danny Vitiello, it showcased the energy and skillset that the 32-year-old can bring to the game.
“You can already see the quality he has,” Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox said. “Tonight it was important that we got him on the pitch.”
“It wasn’t the way I would like for the result of the game, but I felt very happy to debut with the team,” Mota said. “It’s a new team which has a lot to grow and that’s why I feel happy to be part of the project.”
An Unbelievable Save
Another highlight came in the 49th minute when Sporting JAX goalkeeper Jake McGuire faced down an aggressive Sacramento attack, making an incredible save in the process. From the surface of the pitch, the California native got a hand up to stop the ball before securing it, also preventing the home side from growing the lead early in the second half.
Looking Ahead
Saturday’s match may not have gone Sporting JAX’s way, but Fox pointed to the match as an opportunity to continue to make strides in the team’s inaugural season.
“We know where we are in the process of our journey in the first year,” Fox said. “We have to use nights like tonight as a learning experience for us to continue improving.”
The squad will receive a short break from USL Championship play before returning to Hodges Stadium on August 15 to face Indy Eleven, seeking revenge from an exciting meeting between the two in May. This serves as an opportunity to regroup and bounce back, something that the team acknowledged postmatch.
“We’ve got a little break now and we’ve got a home game… we have to bounce back from it,” Sporting JAX midfielder Kieran Sadlier said.
