The Sporting JAX men’s team took on Loudoun United FC Friday night and exhibited a strong first-half performance, but it wasn’t quite enough as the visitors pulled away in the second half.
Kuzain’s Tying Kick
Loudoun got on the board early, striking in the first five minutes, but Sporting JAX was in hot pursuit of an equalizer immediately after. The attack showed promise, consistently applying pressure to the Loudoun defense.
“I think the first 45 minutes was probably as free and as fluid as we’ve been all season,” Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox said.
It all came to fruition in the 30th minute when the squad earned a corner kick. The ensuing ball was headed with pace by forward Emil Jääskeläinen, with midfielder Wan Kuzain offering the finishing touch that sent the ball into the back of the net. A set-piece goal tied things up, and things stayed that way going into the halftime break.
“[The first half] was probably the most fluidity that we’ve had all season, and it obviously led to a corner kick,” Kuzain said. “And from corner kicks, taking your opportunity when you get it; I was in the box and was lucky to get it in.”
Finding the Finish
The first half of Friday’s match was some of the best soccer that Sporting JAX have played all season, but Loudoun broke through in the second half to take control of the match, ultimately earning the win.
“I think that’s what we’ve been searching for all season, and it’s been an Achilles heel of us all season,” Fox said. “We’ve played well in games for large spells, but we haven’t managed to put that 90-minute performance together over the course of the season.”
Looking Ahead
Sporting JAX heads south for a midweek match against Miami FC on Wednesday, September 30 at 7 p.m. With just four matches remaining this season, each fixture is circled by the team as an opportunity to finish strong.
“Every game’s an opportunity to keep showing what you can do; that’s the mentality we have to have the rest of the year,” Kuzain said. “We’ve just got to work hard and try to get some results,” Jääskeläinen added.
