The Sporting JAX men’s team showed resilience after going down a man early to Miami FC on Wednesday, but ultimately fell, 4-1.
Bouncing Back
After a red card saw Sporting JAX go down a man in the first half, Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute. It was a difficult position to be in, but Sporting JAX didn’t give in. Just a minute later, an impressive sequence by forward Emil Jääskeläinen and midfielders Kieran Sadlier and Jean Mota led to a goal. This cut the deficit to one, and was also Mota’s first goal with the club.
“I think before we do anything, we work hard as a team and put the work in, so I think that’s what got us the goal back,” Sadlier said.
Sticking With It
Despite Miami having a man advantage, Sporting JAX didn’t go away easily. For much of the second half, they kept the home side in check and even produced some scares as they nearly tied the match.
“[We] came out in the second half and tried to just maybe be patient, slow the game down. We kept them out for quite a while,” Sadlier said. “We didn’t want to give up; it’s hard when you go down to 10 men away from home as well and they had a lot of possession, but they played well.”
While Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox was ultimately disappointed with the result of the match, he credited the team’s grit and attitude to get back into striking position and make things difficult for the man-up Miami for sizable stretches of the match.
“The game again looks like it’s been an absolute doing; it’s 4-1, it’s another four goals conceded, which is unacceptable again,” Fox said. “I don’t think it was a 4-1 game. Even being down to ten men, the players deserve huge credit for fighting and battling and scratching, but we need to be better than that.”
Mo’s Back
Wednesday’s match saw the return of defender Mohamed Traore, who subbed into the match during stoppage time. This was his first appearance since April, having worked his way back from injury. Following the match, he expressed gratitude regarding his return to the pitch.
“Honestly, it’s been a long journey, but also a blessing because I have a good group of staff and a good group of guys around me,” Traore said. “It’s a blessing and I’m happy to be back with the guys.”
Looking Ahead
Sporting JAX will next take the pitch back at Hodges Stadium on Saturday, October 10 at 5 p.m. as they take on Birmingham Legion FC, a side that they defeated in August. This presents an opportunity to bounce back as the squad looks to conclude its inaugural season with positive results.
“We’ll travel back tomorrow, we’ll be back to work,” Fox said. “We’ve got three games left and we need to make sure that we’re fully focused on those three games.”
Sporting JAX will be observing Breast Cancer Awareness Night on October 10, and fans looking to attend can purchase tickets by clicking below.
