Hodges Stadium | Jacksonville, Fla. — Oct. 14, 2026
The Sporting JAX men’s team took on Birmingham Legion FC on Wednesday in a closed-door match that was rescheduled from Saturday due to inclement weather, falling 1-0 in a hard-fought contest.
Unusual Circumstances
Wednesday’s match was originally scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m., which was then shifted to 1 p.m. on the turf field adjacent to Hodges Stadium due to potential inclement weather. The weather arrived early, forcing the match to be abandoned in the second half and rescheduled to Wednesday night on the usual natural grass pitch at Hodges Stadium. Per league rules, the match was played in full from the opening kickoff.
“That’s obviously been challenging; it’s something I’ve never experienced before,” Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox said. “[It was the] same for a lot of the players.”
Getting to play for 49 minutes on Saturday allowed the teams to get a decent idea of what they’d be facing Wednesday, along with a chance to clean some things up. Sporting JAX defender Harvey Neville spoke to this following the match.
“I think it showed a little bit in our defensive shape in the first half,” Neville said. “We were a bit more organized than we were the other day.”
Despite all the changes made to the match, both teams came out firing. Both Sporting JAX and Birmingham fiercely sought the opening goal of the match, with Birmingham ultimately grabbing it just before halftime.
Fighting Until the End
Sporting JAX came out of the break ready to seek the equalizing goal. They continued testing the Birmingham back line, coming very close to tying the match on a few occasions. One of these was in the 59th minute, when Sporting JAX forward Ahmad Al-Qaq opened up space to fire a shot at the net. It forced the hand of Birmingham goalkeeper Jassem Koleilat, who was able to deflect it away.
The home side never gave in, forcing a complete second half from Birmingham to maintain its lead, and ultimately a 1-0 win.
Luckhurst in the Lineup
Wednesday saw Sporting JAX forward Adam Luckhurst make his first start of the season. The California native made appearances early in the season before being sidelined by injury. He’s since returned to play, making consistent appearances that culminated in a place in Wednesday’s starting eleven.
“I think it’s been tough just because I had such a bad injury a little over a year ago, and I just didn’t know if I was gonna be back,” Luckhurst said. “Getting back on the field, getting that start means everything to me.”
Looking Ahead
It may not have been the desired result, but Wednesday’s match provided an opportunity for the squad to learn, as they try to create momentum in the last two matches of this season that can be taken into 2027.
“Again, I repeat myself: we’ve had a lot of players in their first time in the league this year, so these are the types of games that you need to make sure you try and take something from,” Fox said.
“We want to continue to grow as a group,” Luckhurst added. “Whatever small wins we can get in these last couple games is everything for us.”
The next outing at Hodges Stadium will also be the final home match, a duel against Louisville City FC next Wednesday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. Fans looking to attend can purchase tickets by clicking below.
