Hodges Stadium | Jacksonville, Fla. — Oct. 21, 2026
The Sporting JAX men’s team faced Louisville City FC on Wednesday, holding the visitors scoreless for most of the match, but ultimately fell 2-0.
Home Finale
Wednesday marked the final home match of Sporting JAX’s inaugural season in the USL Championship as the club celebrated Fan Appreciation Night presented by Ascension St. Vincent’s.
Throughout the 2026 season, the venue witnessed Sporting JAX’s first-ever USL Championship win, a 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on July 15. It also played host to a thrilling 3-2 win over Lexington SC on September 5 when Ahmad Al-Qaq’s stoppage-time header propelled the team to victory.
Opportunities to Grow
The final score doesn’t reflect the entirety of Wednesday’s match, as Sporting JAX was able to shut down the Louisville attack for nearly 80 minutes before they eventually found their way onto the scoreboard. The Sporting JAX attack also showed great energy in moments throughout the evening.
Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox spoke to this after the match.
“There was a large portion of the game I was really pleased with,” Fox said. “I thought we defended really well up until we conceded that first goal, and that these are the lessons that we have to learn for next year. We need to turn these defeats into draws and draws into wins.”
Raheem’s Return
Wednesday marked the return of midfielder Raheem Somersall to the starting eleven, his first start since August. The Kittitian was recently sidelined with injury, but has since returned to the pitch as a substitute, and once again as a starter.
“Overall, I feel so good to be back,” Somersall said. “Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way, but I think [we’re] just trying to finish the season strong and have some dignity and play for the community and the team.”
Looking Ahead
Sporting JAX wraps up their inaugural season in the USL Championship against the Tampa Bay Rowdies this Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m.
“We’d like a win, obviously, to finish strong,” Sporting JAX captain Ryan Edwards said. “I think whoever wears the shirt on the day has got self drive to play for themselves, for the club and for their teammates.”
This effort to finish positively that Edwards mentioned is not something that Fox is questioning, or has questioned down the stretch.
“I’ve said this numerous times that the players are giving me absolutely everything in terms of effort and application, and I think you can see that, and I think you can see that over the course of the season,” Fox said.
They’ll look to leave it all on the pitch Saturday against a tough side, who recently won the USL Championship Players’ Shield. No matter the opponent, it will serve as an opportunity for the boys in blue to end the inaugural season on a positive note, while creating momentum going forward.
