It’s been a busy summer of soccer. As that stint of excitement begins to come to a close, though, others are heating up. The Sporting JAX Gainbridge Super League team is nearing the end of its second week in training camp. Although the action has just begun, the group is already adapting as they approach preseason fixtures.
One key concern early on in camp has been the weather. Even for lifelong Floridians, this time of year boasts temperatures that are often unbearable. One can only imagine the strain this provides for those who aren’t from the American South – especially when performing physical activity at such high rates.
Among other areas, this is where Sporting JAX Head of Sports Performance Steve Fell comes into play. With years of experience in professional soccer, including a current role with the U.S. Men’s National Team, Fell knows just how important strength and conditioning is no matter the temperature.
“Every week, we try to build the physical so that it matches the tactical and technical plan of the staff,” Fell said. “We do that in a way that’s progressive and in a way that hopefully gives us full player availability.”
Fell’s national side prowess doesn’t just look good on paper. It’s also shaping how Sporting JAX’s first-ever roster is being evaluated and trained. No matter what level of the sport he coaches, he seeks to treat the athletes equally with respect, helping boost them to perform at their highest level.
“A player is a player,” Fell said. “From the physical preparation side, you treat it all the same.”
When the physical demand is high, it’s important to have leadership that sees and values its athletes. Care like this from Fell and other members of the technical staff will only help bring out the best in this group as they tirelessly continue preparations for Sporting JAX’s inaugural 2025/26 season in the Gainbridge Super League.
