The Sporting JAX men’s team (0-4-1, 1 pt) fell Saturday night to the Tampa Bay Rowdies (4-0-0, 12 pts) on a 95th-minute header.

Returning to Hodges Stadium for their first-ever meeting with Sunshine State rival Tampa Bay, Sporting JAX delivered a spirited performance in front of a strong crowd of home and traveling supporters, creating an electric atmosphere in Jacksonville.

The match opened with early pressure from the visitors, but Sporting JAX’s backline rose to the challenge, turning away multiple chances to keep the match level. Goalkeeper Christian Olivares stood out with a composed and confident performance, anchoring a disciplined defensive effort.

As the first half progressed, Sporting JAX found its rhythm in the attacking third. Kieran Sadlier created a dangerous opportunity inside the box, while Emil Jääskeläinen continued to push the pace and test the Rowdies’ defense, signaling a growing attacking presence.

In the 84th minute, Sporting JAX created one of its best chances on the counter, as Dida Armstrong and Harvey Neville combined down the sideline. Neville found Emil Jääskeläinen in a dangerous position, but the opportunity just missed.

As stoppage time approached, it looked like both sides were headed for a hard-earned draw, with Sporting JAX matching an unbeaten Tampa Bay side throughout.

In the 95th minute, Tampa Bay delivered a cross into the box that was headed home by Evan Conway. Despite the late result, Sporting JAX showed resilience, holding an undefeated opponent scoreless for nearly the entire match. The team spoke to the heartbreak following the match.

“Whether you lose a goal in the first minute or the 94th minute, it always hurts,” Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox said. “But we’ve worked so hard and for the players to put so much into the game to come away with nothing, it’s really difficult to take.”

While it’s a tough result, they also expressed optimism and a belief that, with the progress being continually made, things will get better and the ones will come.

“It’s always about these moments, at the moment when things aren’t going well for you, and things are difficult,” Fox added. “You go through these periods, but it will turn; I’m absolutely sure it’ll turn.”

The players pour hard work and energy into these matches, making endings like this especially difficult. Sporting JAX defenders Tyshawn Rose and Antonio Gomez spoke on it, emphasizing the team’s will to bounce back.

“We’re gonna look at the film and continue to work on what we need to work on to get better for the next game,” Rose said. “There’s a lot of games in this season, so we can’t really dwell on games too long.”

“I thought we fought well,” Gomez said. “It’s getting better and better each day.”

Sporting JAX will be back in action next Saturday, taking on Detroit City FC away from home.

The Sporting JAX women’s team (13-4-5, 44 pts) returned to the win column on Saturday, defeating Brooklyn FC (5-11-7, 22 pts) 2-0 to pad their lead atop the Gainbridge Super League table.

Both teams took to the pitch under a sunny sky, with temperatures in the 80s. Fans gathered at Hodges Stadium to support through the warm weather as their squad continued the march to the playoffs.

Despite entering as underdogs, Brooklyn wasted no time jumping on the offensive. Most of the match’s opening five minutes was spent in their attacking third, but the Sporting JAX defense held strong to keep the visitors off the board.

In the following minutes, Sporting JAX did the same. A couple of chances came and went, including a promising free kick in the 12th minute. Things changed in the 17th minute when Paige Kenton opened the scoring with an assist from Ashlyn Puerta. An early deficit was something Brooklyn needed to avoid, and they now were in the hole.

Towards the end of the first half, Sporting JAX dialed up the pressure once again. A few chances presented themselves, but nothing came of them as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the home team at half time.

The lead nearly doubled when Sporting JAX defender Grace Phillpotts sent a nice cross into the box, with Kenton being the intended recipient. Kenton wasn’t able to connect, though, and Brooklyn remained in the match for the time being. They had a few nice chances on the way, with the first coming courtesy of a corner kick. The Sporting JAX defense held strong, with goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks denying the equalizer.

The storm wasn’t entirely over, though. Brooklyn made the home fans hold their breath in the 68th minute, with Rebecca Cooke setting up Jessica Garziano with a nice pass. The following kick sailed over the post, though, keeping things level once more. This would quickly change, but it wouldn’t be in Brooklyn’s favor.

Just a minute later, Sporting JAX sent a barrage into the box. A brilliant pass by Andrea Fernandez set up Kenton, who was denied by Brooklyn goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty. The ball deflected to Sophia Boman, though, who sent it through to the back of the net. This now marks the third-consecutive match that the midfielder has scored in. Roughly 20 minutes–plus stoppage time–remained and Sporting JAX now held a commanding 2-0 lead.

“I think it was big for us because we don’t want the momentum to shift,” Boman said about the goal. “And just being able to keep them on the back foot and kind of put the game back in our hands was really good.”

While the score remained the same, the final moments weren’t absent of excitement. Hodges Stadium nearly erupted when Fernandez attempted a bicycle kick in the box, which ultimately didn’t succeed. Sporting JAX finished out strong, grabbing a 2-0 win. Another win continues the wildly-impressive inaugural campaign for Sporting JAX, which head coach Stacey Balaam talked to following the match.

“It’s been incredible,” Balaam said. “To put a group together that’s never played with each other before. They didn’t know each other. They’ve come from all different cultures, different environments. Two thirds of them haven’t been professionals before, so they’ve had to learn how to transition into the pro environment.”

A win was just what Sporting JAX wanted, but the group did have takeaways to work on for the coming week.

“We weren’t generating much in attack either–that’s something we’ll look look at moving forward into next week,” midfielder Abby Boyan said postmatch. “We had control over a lot of our possession, but we just weren’t being as useful with it and purposeful.”

With this result, Sporting JAX now moves back to four points clear in the standings of second-place Lexington SC. This win also moves the club one step closer to clinching a playoff berth. Draws or losses from Spokane Zephyr FC on Saturday and DC Power FC on Monday would seal the deal.

This doesn’t mean the mission is finished for Sporting JAX, though. A top seed, along with home-field advantage, is still on the line.

“One game at a time, always,” Balaam said in reference to the postseason. “And that’s the mentality of the group, because they know we’re not looking beyond that. If you look too far ahead, you can overlook the next thing in front of you, and we don’t want to ever do that, because that’s where you can get trapped and we can slip up.”

The march continues next Saturday on the road at Fort Lauderdale United FC, when they’ll look to pick up another three points.

The Sporting Club Jacksonville men’s team (0-3-1, 1 pt) scored twice within five minutes during the second half of Saturday’s USL Championship match with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2-2-0, 6 pts), but it wasn’t enough as they fell, 3-2.

Sporting JAX entered this match needing a result following Wednesday’s home loss to Miami FC. It looked like these hopes may be dashed early when Pittsburgh forward Albert Dikwa struck in the seventh minute to open the scoring.

While it was a rocky start, things settled down a bit. Pittsburgh kept pushing the envelope, though, and it opened in the 25th minute. Riverhounds midfielder Sam Bassett scored on a screamer that likely no goalkeeper would have had a chance at stopping. Now, the lead quickly grew to two.

Sporting JAX got off to a sluggish start, but they did generate chances here and there in the first half of play. Many of these came from forward Emil Jääskeläinen, who has been creating pressure in the box all season long. The best of these chances was a header following a cross from defender Harvey Neville, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Entering the break down 2-0 was the last thing Sporting JAX wanted, but it didn’t mean they were going to give up. Something was brewing amongst the group as the second half began with a ‘now or never’ mentality. It quickly went south, though, when a handball in the opposition’s box led to a penalty kick, which Dikwa scored to balloon the lead to three in the 50th minute.

If Sporting JAX’s backs were previously against the wall, they were now through it. At the unlikeliest of times, that spirit of resilience arrived. Less than 10 minutes later, newcomer Jordan Rossiter sent a shot towards the net, which deflected off Mohamed Traore to sneak past the keeper. The deficit was back to two, and it was a pair of defenders who’d gotten it done.

The high spirits inside Highmark Stadium experienced a brief interruption, but Pittsburgh still comfortably led the match–until they didn’t. Just four minutes after the previous goal, Jääskeläinen timed up an incredible run on a skyrocketed ball downfield to fire one past the keeper. Not only did this shrink the deficit to one goal, but it helped the young attacker gain confidence after coming close many times in 2026.

“It felt good; the first goal is always the hardest,” Jääskeläinen said following the match. “Hopefully there’s many more to come.”

The home crowd was stunned, but the Riverhounds did still have a one-goal advantage. They dug in their heels and tightened up defensively. Sporting JAX tried to find an equalizer, but it never materialized.

Despite the 3-0 deficit early in the second half, this was a match that Sporting JAX had the upper hand in statistically. The visitors controlled possession (60%) and recorded more shots on target, but a result didn’t follow. This now marks the team’s third loss in its first four matches of USL Championship play.

The squad isn’t shying away from the tough start. They may be the new kids on the block, but they’re eager to show the rest of the league that they are a force to be reckoned with. Defender Ryan Edwards, who served as captain in his first appearance Saturday, spoke to what will help turn the tide.

“It’s the key moments in games making the big difference right now,” Edwards said. “Once we become harder to beat and now being our own worst enemy with errors, then the points will start to show.”

Echoing Edwards’ sentiment regarding self-imposed hardship was head coach Liam Fox.

“We really need to improve and we need to improve quickly,” Fox said. “At the moment, it feels like we’re giving ourselves mountains to climb.”

It’s been a talking point throughout the season, but it’s critical to remember just how new this squad is. As they play together more and face adversity–like Saturday’s loss–together, chemistry will build and the team believes that results will follow.

“It’s tough at the moment, but as we speak about regularly, we can see signs of improvement,” Fox said. “It’s difficult for me to say and it’s difficult for people to hear, but there are signs that the team is starting to come together.”

Much like this week, there’s no time to mourn this outcome. The squad hosts in-state rival Tampa Bay Rowdies, who pummeled Pittsburgh 3-0 just one week ago, on Saturday, April 4. It won’t be easy, but a positive result against a talented team from down south could be just what it takes to turn things around early on in 2026.

Sporting Club Jacksonville battled tough conditions and a resilient Spokane Zephyr FC side to earn a hard-fought result Saturday night at Hodges Stadium.

Spokane opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but Sporting JAX answered quickly as Sophia Boman finished a rebound in the 22nd minute to level the match at 1-1.

“Trying to deal with the conditions, this wind has been unreal tonight and keeping our composure and remembering our style of play was important to us,” said Grace Phillpotts.

After a slower start, Sporting JAX settled in and controlled much of the possession, finishing with 71% possession on the night. The club generated 15 shots, including four on target, while continuing to apply pressure in the attacking third despite high winds throughout the match. 

“The ball was bouncing in weird ways, so that was definitely keeping us on our toes,” said Sophie Jones. 

Defensively, goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks anchored the backline with five key stops to keep Spokane off the board following its early goal.

“We feel like it’s a little bit of a setback, but it’s a point on the board,” said Coach Stacey Balaam. “We know that every game is so tough and so competitive, and Brooklyn is going to come with a different style, a different look, different identity. So the things that we’re going to learn from this is going to be a progression to move into next week.” 

Sporting JAX remains atop the table as the club continues its push toward the playoffs in its inaugural season.

The Sporting Club Jacksonville (0-2-1, 1 pt) men got off to a blistering start, but ultimately dropped Wednesday’s home match to Miami FC (1-1-1, 4 pts), 4-2.

It had been over a week since Sporting JAX faced USL Championship competition, and the side was hungry to capture its first win. It looked like it may be the night at Hodges Stadium as the home side jumped out to an early lead in the second minute. An incredible cross from defender Harvey Neville found its way to captain Kieran Sadlier, who put it past the keeper. Jacksonville’s first attack had proved fruitful, and they didn’t let up any.

While Sporting JAX pressed the envelope, it wasn’t long until Miami found success in the 12th minute when Mason Tunbridge scored to level. This was quickly shaping up to be very different from Jacksonville’s last outing at Rhode Island, which saw no goals until the latter moments. The scoring continued when Sporting JAX defender Dida Armstrong drew a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick.

Already having scored once, Sadlier took to the spot. He succeeded with his second goal of the night, putting his team ahead, 2-1. Just 23 minutes into the match, Sporting JAX had already surpassed its record for goals scored in a USL Championship match. Things remained action-packed throughout the rest of the half, but the score stayed the same.

Coming out of the break, Sporting JAX was poised to protect the lead and earn their first-ever USL Championship win. Ultimately, though, this didn’t happen.

The first domino to fall came in the 53rd minute when Miami’s Alessandro Milesi tied things back up with his second goal of the young season. Further trouble arrived just five minutes later when Arney Marimon scored to take the lead.

The final nail in the coffin arrived when an awkward sequence caught the Sporting JAX defense off-guard in the 84th, leading to Miami’s fourth goal of the evening. This isn’t to say that the home squad didn’t have chances. There were moments in the midway point of the second half where it looked like they may cut into the lead, but these were not meant to be.

“By the time we had more chances, they’d got back in the game and gone ahead,” Sadlier admitted. “We just need to finish our chances; it’s as simple as that,” Armstrong added.

It’s a disappointing result, but lessons are being learned as Sporting JAX navigates the earliest days of its inaugural season in the USL Championship. Head coach Liam Fox spoke to this following the match.

“There’s going to be some challenges. There’s going to be some ups. There’s going to be some downs,” Fox said. “It was disappointment; that’s to be expected. I’d be worried if there wasn’t disappointment.”

Players echoed this sentiment, including Armstrong, one of the team’s first signings.

“We started off saying that we wouldn’t lose a home game, and we’ve done that twice now, so I think there’s disappointment, but there’s a sense of pride that needs to happen,” Armstrong said. “It’s [a matter of] just getting back to the drawing board, working hard and trained, coming out stronger, and just looking forward to the next.”

Part of this is naturally the lack of time the team has spent together. With each match and every day at training, this group will continue to gel more and more. As the team’s captain, Sadlier has noticed this.

“There’s always progress,” Sadlier said. “We definitely improved in certain areas, and we’re always trying to improve; It’s very early in the season, but there’s definitely improvement.”

While progress was made, Coach Fox did hone in on some areas of improvement, including defense as a whole.

“We need to make sure that we’re better defending,” Fox said. “And that’s not just the defenders, and that’s the whole team. We need to make sure that we work a bit harder to make teams earn their goals a bit more.”

There’s no time for Sporting JAX to sulk, as they’ll be back in business on the road Saturday against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Coming away with a win at Highmark Stadium won’t be an easy task, but earning a point will be crucial for Sporting JAX to avoid falling behind in the Eastern Conference.

“We can choose to feel sorry for ourselves and roll over, or we can just get back to work and keep improving, trying to improve every single day,” Fox added. “We’ll review it, we’ll learn from it, we’ll discuss it, and then our focus will quickly shift to Saturday, because that’s the next game.”

Sunday afternoon’s showdown between Dallas Trinity FC and Sporting Club Jacksonville, resulted in a striking display of dominance from the Sporting JAX frontline, and proved exactly why they sit high at the top of the table.

The scoring started with Baylee DeSmit launching a beautiful shot into the back of the net. Paige Kenton followed DeSmit’s lead just two minutes later with a goal in the 47th minute before the half.

“Once we get going, we kind of just feed off each other,” said DeSmit, the night’s first goal scorer. “The whole team just has a really incredible chemistry, so making those kinds of plays, and then making them over and over again, is something that just happens for us and it’s fun to be a part of.”

The scoring didn’t stop there though. Sophia Boman and Meg Hughes capitalized on the momentum from the first half and placed two more goals in the back of the net to push the lead to four. The pair recorded their third (Boman) and second (Hughes) goals of the season.

“It was such a well placed ball by Paige (Kenton),” said Boman. “I knew that she saw me coming, and so I knew she was going to place it where it needed to go, and the goal was just a result of that connection.”

The win brings many milestones for the Gainbridge Super League leaders. With these three points, Kaitlyn Parks has now tied the regular season record of nine clean sheets with Spokane Zephyr’s Hope Hisey, and maintains a solid four consecutive clean sheets with this win.

Another star shines in Paige Kenton as she now leads the league in assists with seven on the season, and is tied at third with Gianna Gourley for goals with eight on the season.

“They are such a good group,” said Head Coach Stacey Balaam. “They just play so hard and give their all every time they step on the pitch, and that’s not something you can teach. Watching them is incredibly exciting.”

The team aims to bring the energy home for their next match at Hodges against Spokane Zephyr FC where the top two goalies in the league meet for the second time. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and is available to watch on Peacock.

Sporting JAX and in-state foes Fort Lauderdale United FC, battled it out this evening at Beyond Bancard Field, where Sporting JAX ran away with a solid three points after their 2-0 win. 

The scoring started off strong with a header from Georgia Brown; her second of the season. Baylee DeSmit then sent one flying to the back of the net before the end of the first half.

“It always feels good to score,” said Brown. “I think it’s even more fun when you’re a defender and it’s a header. And that little tribute to Rory (McIlroy) with the celebration was honestly my favorite part.”

Another key part of this strong win was defender Maggie Illig, who made her first professional start tonight alongside Brown and Grace Phillpotts.

“It was a great game to start in,” said Illig. “It was a very physical game, but in the end we pulled through, and that’s always what you want from your first start.”

The team looks to continue their win streak as they take on Dallas Trinity FC next weekend on Sunday, March 22. Head Coach Stacey Balaam knows that while her team has shown dominance throughout the season, it is no time to slow down.

“We are going to continue working as we always have,” said Balaam. “Just because we have the lead doesn’t mean we play any more relaxed or slow down in training. If anything, we push harder and we train harder.”

As the push for the playoffs begins, Sporting JAX is determined to keep the momentum that they have built throughout the season, and make their mark in their first year in the Gainbridge Super League.

Sporting Club Jacksonville (0-1-1, 1 pt) earned the first point in the club’s USL Championship history via a scrappy 1-1 draw against Rhode Island FC (0-1-1, 1 pt) on Saturday.

An energetic crowd filed into Centreville Bank Stadium on a cold and windy March afternoon for what had become the team’s season opener following a weather-related postponement of last week’s match.

Rhode Island may have not played last week, but it didn’t show as the home side pounced on the attack to begin the match. Sporting JAX dug in their heels and settled in, though. An early sign of life for the Jacksonville offense came from a defender, when defender Tyshawn Rose launched a shot at the goal in the 24th minute, forcing an impressive save by Rhode Island keeper Koke Vegas.

One key descriptor for the first half, and much of the match, was chippy. It was a physical affair, with plenty of aggressive play taking place throughout. This would continue later into the match, especially in its latter moments.

Coming into this match, Sporting JAX had Rhode Island forward JJ William’s name circled. This proved accurate, as Williams was all over the pitch firing shots left and right. One of these came in the 43rd minute, when he sent a screamer off the right post. There had been close calls, but Sporting JAX hung on to enter the half time break all even.

There were more offensive fireworks from the home side to open the second half, but Sporting JAX goalkeeper Christian Olivares and his back line held strong throughout. That was until an unfortunate deflection caught Jacksonville in a bad spot in the 79th minute, allowing Rhode Island’s Logan Dorsey to fire the ball into the net.

“With 10 minutes to play, there was a mistake made by me, but I think the boys did well to bounce back,” Olivares said. “They came through and bailed me out; [I’m] upset about the mistake, but really happy with how the boys reacted.”

With just over 10 minutes left in regular time, Jacksonville had their work cut out for them. An opportunity arose when Emil Jaaskelainen fired a shot on goal, bouncing off of Vegas’ hands. Midfielder Rafferty Pedder, who has been with the team for less than two weeks, was there to capitalize, firing the ball into the net to equalize in the 84th minute.

The match was tied, but the squad wanted more. Staying tied became the main objective when midfielder Jordan Rossiter drew his second yellow card, ejecting him from the match. Now down a man, Sporting JAX had to survive for roughly 10 more minutes.

Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox was pleased with the resilience that his squad showed despite facing tough circumstances.

“I was pleased that when we went behind a goal, we didn’t roll over and stayed in the game,” Fox said. “I’m really pleased with lots of aspects from the performance.”

A great save by Olivares highlighted an impressive stand by Sporting JAX, who managed a 1-1 result to earn the team’s first point of the season.

“It was fun; I’m happy,” Pedder said in reference to the first goal with his new club, which was also to be the team’s first regular season goal in its USL Championship history. “It was a tough game, but when you play away, it’s better to come away with something rather than nothing.”

Ultimately, Fox noted that there is room for improvement, especially regarding offensive possession. This was highlighted by the number of shots taken, with Rhode Island recording nearly 20 more than Sporting JAX.

“Today, we were nowhere near the level I want us to be at with possession of the ball, but we hung in there,” Fox said. “Sometimes in soccer, you have to hang in there and we did that today.”

Sporting Club Jacksonville (0-1-0, 0 pts) opened its USL Championship era on Saturday, falling to Hartford Athletic, 3-0, (1-0-0, 3 pts) to kick off the 2026 season.

A crowd of 10,357 fans packed into Hodges Stadium for a historic evening of soccer, watching the freshly-assembled squad play its first competitive minutes in the league.

The first potential chance for Sporting JAX came in the form of a corner kick in the 4th minute, but nothing ultimately came of the opportunity. The home side didn’t let up, though, creating more chances in the match’s opening minutes. Headers came and went, but Hartford held strong to keep things scoreless.

The visitors were not dormant, creating solid looks of their own. The momentum began to shift later in the first half, with the winning goal following closely. In the 44th minute, Sporting JAX goalkeeper Christian Olivares was forced off his line when two Hartford attackers made their way into the box. It wasn’t long before Auggie Williams seized the ball, sending it into the back of the net to give his team the lead just before half.

A one-goal deficit wasn’t what Sporting JAX wanted at its first half time break, but it was far from insurmountable. The team’s response early in the second half reflected this. Just two minutes into the resumption of play, Sporting JAX forward Emil Jaaskelainen sent a shot on goal, forcing an impressive save from Hartford keeper Siaha Ngnepi.

The deficit remained, but the determination to equalize was very much present. This hope met a wall in the 53rd minute when Hartford was awarded a penalty kick. Williams, already having made his mark on the match, stepped forward to take the kick. The shot was good, but the save was better. An incredible stop by Olivares added even more energy to the squad as they pursued a goal.

A similar situation occurred for Sporting JAX, when midfielder Wan Kuzain sent a fast free kick towards the net, but once again, Ngnepi made a great stop to keep his squad in the lead. 

The home side had a few more chances, but Hartford made things even tougher when Samuel Careaga scored to double the lead just minutes after entering the match as a substitute. Sporting JAX persisted, but the final nail arrived in the 90th minute when another substitute, Adewale Obalola, scored to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. This is ultimately how things came to an end on an exciting night in Jacksonville.

“It was strange because we played some nice football, probably the best we’ve played all preseason leading up to it,” Sporting JAX captain Kieran Sadlier said. “We had good spells where we just couldn’t do it in the final third, so it’s disappointing in that aspect but a great night for the club starting off our season.”

The result was not what Sporting JAX Head Coach Liam Fox was hoping for, but he did acknowledge the variables undeniably at play.

“We’re a new side–we’ve only been together five and a half weeks,” Fox said. “There’s large parts of today I’m pleased with, but there’s also stuff that needs to be worked on and we’ll get back to work and training in the next couple of days and we’ll build on those blocks from there.”

Aside from the obvious disappointment in the result, it was an unforgettable night for the club. One highlight from the evening occurred in the second half when Florida native and University of North Florida alum Luc Granitur took the field for Sporting JAX. Following the match, he reflected on what the moment meant for him to play professional minutes at Hodges Stadium.

“For me, it was special playing on my college field,” Granitur said. “I have a lot of great memories here and this one’s not a great one, but there’s a lot of great ones to come with this team on the field.”

The team now has points to improve on, but Saturday night was an important first step in the squad’s inaugural USL Championship campaign. It’s important that, even with a loss, the team holds to its values while making these improvements, which Fox reaffirmed postmatch.

“This system is how I see the game,” Fox said. “Every day we’re working on it and it’s a process that’s going to continue to improve.”
